The Essence of It All
Have you ever thought about photographs? Have you ever looked at a picture and wondered what the photographer was trying to capture? Ever looked at a photo and had it really speak to you?
I LOVE photography. Mainly, I LOVE taking nature photos (even though I did say earlier in another post, I try to capture people's eyes). It could be butterflies, birds, trees, flowers or my ALL TIME fav- the beach.
When I take a picture in nature, I try to capture exactly what I see and how it makes me feel. For example, if I photograph a butterfly, I try to capture the beauty, the amazement of it. I want the person looking at my photo to SEE exactly what I saw. I want the person that sees my photo to FEEL exactly what I felt. What is the point of taking a picture, if its just a picture? I am trying to capture the beauty of nature. Think of all the things in nature. Now think of how absolutely amazing it all is. THAT is what I am trying to capture when I take pictures.
When my and I were discussing some pictures she had taken, I told her I was just complimenting her because the picture said something to me. It made me feel something. There was a picture of her, where she was truly smiling with her eyes. Her eyes were just beautiful but I could see the happiness and fun in her eyes. I knew it was a special occasion. I noticed that she smiled lot with her eyes. This is what needs to be captured....the true essence.
Another thing I love to photograph that I mentioned is the beach. When I take pictures there, my favorite beach of course, I try to get the picture that will make the person viewing it, immerse themselves into my picture and be there in that moment. I want them to hear the ocean waves, the sea gulls, smell the salty air, to feel the sand between their toes. Just for that moment in time. THAT is why I take pictures.
Birds, same thing. Can you hear the wings fluttering? See the birds land and takeoff quickly when it has had enough? Can you see the colors as vividly as I can when I took the picture?
There has been A LOT of snow fall this year where I live and the scenery is just beautiful (even thought I am PRAYING IT MELTS BEFORE JULY!). The trees look like they are dripping white fluffy cotton and the ground is covered in soft cushy clouds. I want you to feel the cold air, smell the fresh crispness of newly fallen snow and I want you to see what I see.
The next time you take a picture, figure out what you were trying to capture in the picture. Did you get it? That feeling you had just before the shot. Did you get it in the photo? Did you capture the true essence?
What do you like to photograph?
